salaryman-san replied to your photo: Its a dick joke. I couldnt find an actual…

chin is short for chinko, which is penis. so its definitely a dick joke of sorts (pretty sure there was a guy in Gintama who was also nicknamed Takachin. Chinpira also means (literally) an apprentice yakuza, or just hooligan / punk

Ahh, thank you so much!  Yes, I remember Takachin on Gintama, lol.  In Beelzebub, Furuichi has another nickname which is also a dick joke, poor guy (Furuchin).

Wow Tamura sure is literal when he names his schools!

Furuichi: Character development done right…and kept

fabelyn:

My favorite arc by a mile in Beelzebub is the Tissue arc. Why? Because, among other things, it got a character (Furuichi) that had been relegated to stupid comic relief that consisted of every other character in the manga bullying him and treating him badly…only to show us that he wasn’t just that cliche gag character, that he had depth and he felt deeply about the bullying he was suffering, to the point of suicide. He also felt useless and uncared for, both things turning out to be untrue by the end.

But of course, he’s not the main character and this is a gag manga, so the focus after that arc quickly shifted and his problems were pushed aside.

This made me ask myself: will Tamura remember to keep this development?  To remember to stop the strong bullying, keep Oga and Furuichi as really best friends, make Furuichi remember he does have his importance?

Well…this chapter answered it. Here’s why, with images:

Let’s see how he was in the tissue arc:

image

Huh, suicidal, feeling that noone liked him or apreciated him.

Now let’s look at how the Pillar Squad, specifically Hecatos, treated him:

image

Calling him brat, in the next page he’ll complain about being shackled to Furuichi etc Basically, no respect.

Now let’s look at the current chapter:

image

Furuichi now acknowledges his importance to the Oga group.

And what about Hecatos? Well…

image

Oh hey look, no more “brat”. Now he’s calling Furuichi by a respectful title, “Tactician”.

So thank you Tamura, for keeping consistent in your character development of Furuichi, this is awesome.

This! Furuichi has truly grown, and I can’t wait to see what this arc has in store for him next.

Beelzebub Chapter 204: The Many Ways to Tell a Story

So lets talk about details in this chapter.  You have been warned this is a long post!

1) There’s literally no set-up.  Tamura really excels at cramming a lot of information into his chapters, and this was no exception.  We’re thrown into the chapter from Furuichi’s perspective right from page one.  This is great because not only do we understand Furuichi getting caught off-guard, the readers are equally caught off guard.  It happened so soon, but that’s what makes Himekawa’s motives all the more ambiguous.

2) It’s night time.   Night is a great mood changer.  Everything feels more serious, more desperate, more honest, more intimate.  Consider this: Oga fought Toujo and destroyed the school at night.  Hecadoth stabbed Hilda and almost killed Oga at night time too.  Later on, Oga storms Akumano Academy and rescues Hilda — all in the course of one night.  The climax of the Okinawa arc?  Happened at night.  When Oga fights at night, it’s usually a game changer.  What does this say about this arc? Hopefully, we’ll find out soon.

3) The ranks of friendship compared to the ranks of power.  I don’t know if I ever mentioned it, but this arc is literally all about hierarchy.  And I love how especially with Takamiya, this is all the Angels ever talk about.  Why is Himekawa no. 3?  Does the number indicate how loyal you are, or how useful you are? Top Hat admits that even though he’s been with Takamiya the longest, he is still just an observer. Masky on the other hand is bitter about not being viewed as useful anymore.  Its a good contrast to Furuichi, who is not only Oga’s partner, but also Oga’s friend.

4) Takamiya is a plot-twist by literally existing.  Last chapter, right after we get a good look at him, Oga storms the Angels’ hangout in an attempt to get Himekawa back.  It’s seriously unexpect, but it provides Himekawa with the opportunity to suggest kidnapping Furuichi. In this chapter, Takamiya’s brief cameo quickly leads to Furuichi gaining a second wind and using the tissues in order to fight.  In fact, I’d say that if it weren’t for Takamiya, Furuichi might not have connected things together.  This enhances Takamiya’s personality a lot.

5) Last but not least, the cliffhanger.  The chapter throws a good curveball on what might happen next chapter.  Not only has Furuichi decided to use the poisonous tissues to fight Takamiya’s Angels, but Hecadoth wants information from them as well!  On top of that, Furuichi is already in poor shape.  And Is Himekawa aware of who he’s really dealing with?  Will Oga and Furuichi take out the entire Fallen Angels squad in one night, or does Takamiya have something else up his sleeve?  Damnit, I really can’t wait for next week now.

The Meaning of Furuichi’s Name

blackthornhiei:

I ran each individual kanji of Furu’s full name in Google translate… and got…

The Ancient City of Takashi…

o_O?

Yeah, that’s the very literal meaning of Furuichi’s name.  It’s also the name of a train station in Japan.  But the real meaning of his name is a lot simpler.

This is taken from the Q&A in volume 17 (Okinawa arc):

Q2 :古市の誕生日が11月11日だから全部1(フル1)で名字が古市なんですか?ちがったらごめなさい!!

Q2: Furuichi’s birthday is on 11th November (11-11), which is full of “1”.  Is that where his surname comes up?

A2 :その通りです!気づいてくれた嬉しい!

A2: That’s right! I’m happy that someone is aware about it!

In Japanese, “furu” is pronounced with the same katakana as the English would “full”.  ”Ichi” means “one”.  Its a pun that means Furuichi is “full of one”. This is why his birthday is on 11/11. Combine that with Furuichi’s first name Takayuki (which means preciousness) and you get something along the lines of “one filled with preciousness”.

Translation of the Q&A can be found here.

Jump Double Issue #22/23 - Heroes vs Rivals

Man, I love how Furuichi got to be the rival.  Its just so perfect and relevant, even if it isn’t the most literal interpretation of “rival”.  I can’t wait to see what happens with him in this arc.

For the cover itself, I’m not too fond of it. This cover could have been handled so much better in its layout and execution.  For one thing, the boxes completely ruin the character designs, as a lot of them are cut off.  Te stars-in-space background totally overwhelm the boxes as well.  And these aren’t reused images, the authors actually took the time to draw these headshots.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t just stack the MCs on top of each other, like they normally do with group shots. Then the reverse could have been the rivals, in a similar fashion.  Or they could have had scenery and have chibi versions of the MCs and rivals fight each other like they’ve done in the past.  Its a great idea, but executed just barely.

Best cover of all the covers, Volume 21.

A better quality of 500px height should be out within a few days or less.

I admit, this redeems the Christmas arc a lot to me.  Pretty clever of him to avoid all the shipping drama by having just the babies on it.

0blue-bird0:

hmm,
i’m a bit curious if Furuichi being put on the villain side of the Weekly Jump cover is just the author messing around or…

I don’t know if these are suppose to be “villains” as much as “rivals”.  A lot of these characters aren’t actual villains, but more like the key foil character to the protagonist. A rival can mean different things to different series.

Chitoge, the blonde girl in the middle, is the love interest and heroine of Nisekoi, but she’s still the “rival” for her series.  Same with Kumagawa from Medaka Box — he’s the Vice President and a really close friend of Medaka’s, but he’s still a rival because he challenges the protagonist’s authority.

So if anything, I think Tamura is trying to say Furuichi is still relevant to the series and is the one who challenges Oga the most, both physically and mentally.  Then again, this cover could also be interpreted  as celebrating fo-yay, since I’m pretty sure all the heros and rivals can be shipped together.

Official wallpaper from Shonen Jump, circa 2010.  Found on baidu forums.  Kind of appropriate now that Kunieda’s back to being leader of the Red Tails, isn’t it?

Oga skateboards at Ishiyama? Ok then.

I’m kind of sad there’s only one more to go.  I wonder how long the webpage will last after the last wallpaper comes out.

see i got stuck on the kanji in the last line here image

i know the rest says something like Furuichi takayuki. also known as mobichi (me: cries) then something about how he’s best buds/opposites with oga, and then something about how he’s a womanizer :P and then the rest i cant read cuz fuzzy kanji >O<

Here’s what it says.

Furuichi Takayuki

Also known as Mobuchi [Not mobi! Mobu is a term used for minor/background characters/characters that aren’t relevant]. Wether he wants to or not, he’s a close friend of Oga’s. What he likes is girls and that’s pretty much it. Sometimes he’s mistakenly seen as Resourceful General Furuichi.

Don’t quote me on that last one, from what I see I think Chishou Furuichi is sort of a nickname they gave him, or rather he’s the type of character that people would think they could get solutions from but in the end he’s really not? Something along those lines. Resourceful general is the literal translation.

ahh thank you!! you’re always so good to me :’U

*rolls around* he should totally be general! >o< I WONDERED WHAT MOBUCHI MEANT, they left it untranslated in the scanlation i read OTL i feel so bad for this guy.

!!!  I had no idea you could click on Oga’s banner and wow thank you so much for translating this we seriously lack translators in this fandom!!

If I’m not mistaken, this is really close to what Furuichi’s bio is on the main Beelzebub page.  So yeah, nothing new except the “General Furuichi” part.

New information added on Jump’s official website on the Killer Six Elements (Six Upstarts).

Holy Shit.  No wait, you guys don’t understandThis is what the banner looked like since the beginning of March:

Basically I thought this was some pretty mediocre banner art, considering this is Beelzebub’s 4th anniversary.  Boy was I wrong.

So what does this mean?!? We’re going to be finding out about Takamiya real soon.  In fact, I’m positive we’ll find out about him in the next upcoming chapter (197).

Also, they’ve added two new chapters that can be read online: ch 156, and the original Beelzebub oneshot.
