I just realized
If Tamura could do a Christmas Arc…
…what makes you think there isn’t going to be a Valentines Day Arc?
….or even a White Day Arc?
I am even predicting the plot, guys.
Oh Tamura, you trollsome shipper you.

And boring. Hilda is so two-dimensional and tell us again why should Aoi continue to get hung up on Oga? She deserves better. Stop with the stupid couple shit and get to her mother’s mysterious disappearance.
I haven’t completely dropped Beelzebub yet, but I really hope this arc was a fluke and we’ll get something better next time.
Honestly, this whole are was a disappointment. Its just shipping pandering. The only redeeming feature is the humor, which is obviously what Beelzebub is about, and even then I can’t find it funny because the context isn’t funny. This arc is lacking in more ways than one. And if the author seriously wanted to flesh out the love triangle, there were a ton of better ways he could have done that.
Good thing its wrapping up next chapter!
I laughed once or twice, but the complete randomness and unfairness of the games got old really quickly (and Furuichi and Nene being kicked out so ridiculously was the final straw).
Sadly I don’t think we’ll ever see Aoi get over Oga because screw character development, the main male lead must always have chicks after him. I actually like it when Hilda is cold and distant; it’s a change from all the exagerated reactions the characters seem to have.
If this was to flesh out the love triangle: ouch, totally failed. The problem is that it isn’t a love triangle: Oga is
asexual or gaynot interested in either girl and neither is Hilda interested in Oga (or if she is, then she keeps it well hidden and wouldn’t fight for him) and Aoi was given no reason to keep going with this puppy love of hers.Hopefully this was just a lighthearted break before Tamura goes into another
bl-riddenserious arc again. We sure have lots of material left hanging for that.
Actually, I don’t mind Aoi’s crush on Oga and I really like her as a character. Its refreshing is that it IS a crush, and the author isn’t trying to paint on a pure picture of an unrequited love. I was really pleased with the Okinawa Arc in this sense: Aoi’s realization she should accept her feelings had nothing to do with Oga. There’s nothing wrong with having crushes and falling love, and that was something she needed to accept regardless who she fell for.
But yeah, the “MC must have someone in love with him trope” can get old, and even moreso when I kind of want Hilda and Aoi to interact more without the pretext of Oga being there. Someone once said that the author has structured the story in such a way that Aoi and Hilda can’t physically share the same space, it must always be one or the other. Which is a shame because for a while in the Volleyball arc they seemed to start an interesting friendship. And they’d be the perfect match to be contractor-contractee.
Oh I totally agree about the love triangle. Its an awkward case of when fandom’s perception of a love triangle starts to become a part of canon’s storyline, and even then its done to excite the fanbase rather than progress the story. Yup, Tamura is hyper-aware of his fanbase and it clearly shows, especially in arcs like these. Its another reason why I just hate this arc so much: it’s actually too meta for me to handle, and it makes me remember that ultimately the author is just doing what he likes.
I have a feeling the next arc will be more serious, or at least not romantic based. We’ll see if Tamura makes it entertaining enough to pique my interest. But hey, if this arc didn’t suck so badly I’d have never gotten into Magi.

Inb4 some totally new and unrelated characters to the story take out the grand prize.
You know what would be REALLY funny? If Kazuya and Azusa win. They’ve been a not-couple since their introduction!

Oh I feel the same way. A ship doesn’t really exist, its the readers who find meaning in it. So I didn’t mean “grr, that ship” as much as “I have a headache from the shippers”.
Good observation! But I think that’s only happened with Beelzebub and Bleach. Since I don’t talk much about other ships on tumblr, it must sound like I only like one kind of pairing. But now that I think about it…I don’t think I’ve read/watched enough anime/manga that have outspoken brash girls in them anyway. So its not so much that I go against the grain of the manga, as much as the manga that I read aren’t defined by that one female character type. Its not even intentional!
Now that I think about it, there must be something distinctly similar about Beelzebub and Bleach that makes me not ship the main hero + heroine. Because I didn’t even notice a pattern until you mentioned it. Going through my manga list, if I ship something, I tend to ship main guy + main girl. Then again, I feel Bleach and Beelzebub are unique examples because both have active fandoms that are very ship heavy. Most of the other manga I read…not so much. In conclusion, I am just obsessed with Beelzebub at the moment, hence the tunnel vision when it comes to ships.
Haha interesting. Personally I always ship the main character with the character I like the most. Since in Bleach that was Rukia, Ichirukia was my OTP. I like Aoi but I love Furuichi so that’s who i ship Oga with ^^
Wow, that’s very different to me! While I do ship the main character more often than not, I don’t make the connection that I’m putting my favorite character with the main character as much as I just…go with the flow? Each fandom is really different for me. I ship according to my mood when I read the story. And each story means something different.
Like in Beelzebub, I find Oga and Furuichi’s relationship seriously realistic and very laid back. This reflects what I like the most about Beelzebub: its a parody with a light plot, but the relationships between the characters are very natural. I like Oga/Aoi because I find Aoi’s crush remarkably realistic too.
With other fandoms that I ship in, its the same. Depending on what I like about it, I’ll ship accordingly. So what applies to Beelzebub doesn’t apply at all to say, Detective Conan, or MTNN. Then again, I just think I’m going around in circles trying to justify it, much like trying to explain a favorite color. Sometimes you just do, and its not an interest that links back to some higher meaning. I just do it.
@thebibi
hey that’s alright. we think all shippers at one point will claim that the creators ‘ship’ their pairing of choice. we dislike that pairing too, but more their fans rather than the pairing itself. and i hope you don’t mind us saying this, but we noticed that you tend to not ship the main guy with the more outspoken and brash girl in any manga. is there any reason for this? :3

Shipping in Beelzebub. More awesomeness courtesy of the /a/ thread. Thank you, whoever did this! (open in new tab to see better)
Can I just say that even the fact that Furuichi represents the hetero shippers and Oga represents the yaoi shippers is perfect. The fact that it ends with them battling in the chapter that is the most vague who won….its fucking perfect.
Thank you, 4chan, for being so hilariously insightful, while not forgetting what Beelzebub is really about.
In b4 Hilda vs. Aoi, round 394. If shippers can bash Aoi for not getting with Aiba, what makes you think we are reading the same manga?
At least we’re funny. And it’s stupid to call it yaoi because yaoi means ROMANTIC ATTRACTION. We never said they’re yaoi, see?
If Ichiruki is yaoi then that means Ogafuru isn’t yaoi. It’s something else. *is horrible at trolling, but had to ask the experts*
We like you, BB. Stupid trolls, see that? Even your own IchiHime doesn’t approve of your shit.
This is probably going to be the first and only time I talk about Bleach ships, but its really funny to see yaoi being the ultimate way of saying “its not canon! It’ll never be canon!”
I wonder when shipping fandom will just ship what they ship and not bring up the pesky canon word. I like Orihime and Ichigo together (and when I was following Bleach I shipped them a lot more), but hoping they would become canon wasn’t a large part of it. It still doesn’t. That’s what fanfiction, fanart, and hentai hentai doujinshi is for, right?

Just curious. I like both pairings but I prefer him with Kunieda.
You’re never alone as you think you are. Tons of people ship Oga/Kunieda. A couple of posts down, someone was showing their Oga/Kunieda WIP drawing as well.
I ship Oga/Kunieda over Oga/Hilda myself, though obviously I ship Oga/Furuichi more.
I don’t get how people could argue whether Oga should be with Hilda or Aoi while Furuichi is still in the picture.
You don’t have to ship it to pick up on the buttsex subtext.
Agreed. 8D Just switch Furuichi’s gender and see what happens—you get a harem manga.
